What was the game that took you from being a fan of TCU's football team...to being the kind of degenerate fiend that obsesses over TCU football on a daily basis and has following the Frogs absurdly high on your list of priorities in life?
For me, it was the regular season finale in my freshman year of 2001, when the Frogs visited soon-to-be CUSA arch-rival Southern Miss.
If you recall, GP's first full year as head coach was pretty hit-or-miss. An early moral victory in a close road loss to Nebraska was forgotten when the Frogs lost at home to I-AA Northwestern State on a blocked field goal in OT. A solid victory over a decent Houston team was overshadowed by lop-sided losses to the likes of Tulane and UAB. At 4-5 with their only games remaining against #17 Louisville and at CUSA mainstay Southern Miss, things didn't look swell for the Frogs' bowl streak extending to four.
TCU opened that Louisville game up with an 80-yard bomb from Casey Printers to Adrian Madise on the first play from scrimmage, and never looked back and upset the Cardinals, 37-22. The week after the game, the committee of the galleryfurniture.com Bowl (yes, that was the name of it and, no, it wasn't capitalized) stated that they would invite the winner of TCU-Southern Miss to face Texas A&M in what would be the final college football game ever played at the Astrodome.
For most of the first half, things looked pretty bleak as the Golden Eagles' defense had the Frogs' offense locked down. Southern Miss led 10-0 when Printers finally got TCU on the board with a 6-yard touchdown run on an option keeper late in the second quarter.
The early-strike attack of Printers to Madise struck again early in the third quarter as they hooked up for a 74-yard touchdown pass to give TCU a 14-10 lead. Later that quarter, Printers was sacked in his own end zone to make it 14-12.
While the Frogs could never pad their lead in the 4th quarter, but Southern Miss threatened twice very late. With 3:11 to go, after driving to the Frogs' 28-yard line, they missed on a 45-yard field goal that would've given them the lead. After forcing a three & out, USM got the ball back and started driving again. With 33 seconds left, they had the ball at the TCU 32 but Jeff Kelly's pass attempt was picked off by TCU's Kenneth Hilliard to preserve the win. Even if you weren't a TCU fan at the time, you may remember the play- it was widely considered the play that vaulted Nebrask'a SOS enough to get them into the championship game in what was one of the messiest years for the old BCS.
I was with a group of about 20 guys watching in the chapter room of our fraternity and we went nuts. The media, especially locally, had dogged the Frogs and GP as being past the glory years of LT and Fran, and predicted a quick drop-off. Now the Frogs would have a shot at "mighty" A&M (although that game didn't go so well). I was hooked, and pretty quickly dove into following TCU football (and eventually other sports) on a daily basis.
