Here's a new article from Brett McMurphy on Big 12 expansion and the likely 17 suitors vying for two or four spots.
Personally, I agree with Coach that it's not the Big 12 job to make a university better by joining the conference, but reality is there will likely be at least a couple additional members very soon.
I know there are many people in Texas that would like to see Houston join the conference. Yet, there are also many inside the state, and especially out-of-state, that don't want to see this happen. Most notably because of recruiting purposes.
Considering the ultimate decision will come down to the Presidents and chancellors I think there might be a surprise pick in the end.
The obvious choice for many is the addition of Cincinnati. They check off a lot of the boxes and also would give a natural rival and travel partner with West Virginia. Getting into the Ohio market would also be huge.
With the recent issues at Baylor, I think many of the presidents and chancellors will be hesitant with adding schools that have a history of misconduct or stand firm with certain social issues, most notably the LGBTQ issue. This could hinder programs like Memphis and BYU for inclusion.
Without getting into any of the financial or other reasons for conference inclusion in this post, my own personal feeling is that by end of September the Big 12 will add at least two new members. My personal two favorites are Cincinnati and Colorado State. Colorado State being the surprise pick but I think there's a lot of steam being generated for their selection.
Obviously, TCU fans are very familiar with their program. CSU is a fast-growing University with a lot of recent growth academically, athletically, and inside the community, most notably with New Belgium Brewery Company. There's also a large Big 12 presence with alumni in the Denver area. Even though Colorado State doesn't have a huge footprint in Denver currently you would assume by joining the Big 12 that would change. Also, I think a trip to Fort Collins every so often isn't all that bad. I've enjoyed the community and surrounding area the couple times I've been there. Maybe the biggest reason for including Colorado State into the conference is that they just won't publicly embarrass the conference like say Baylor. They are one of only a handful of universities nationally with squeaky clean image. They may not stand out in one particular area, but outside of maybe overall athletic budget, there are no real negatives with their inclusion.
What are other frog fans feelings on conference realignment and do they have any favorites?
